At SMD, we are passionate about shaping the future of construction by inspiring and educating the next generation.

That is why we were thrilled to tell you about our recent partnership with Manor High School for an interactive Careers Talk & Tour event — designed to give students firsthand insights into the world of construction and introduce them to the diverse sectors, roles, and training opportunities within our industry.

Collaboration at Its Best

The idea for this initiative came from the collaborative efforts of Project Manager Steve Ingall, Marketing Coordinator Tia Camp, and Management Trainee Marium Ullah. Their innovative approach brought this concept to life, and with the support of Assistant Head Teacher Jim Croucher, we were able to bring it to reality. This 2-day event welcomed 90 students, aged 11 to 16, who eagerly signed up to learn more.

An Engaging and Interactive Experience

Our assembly sessions introduced students to the breadth of career opportunities within the construction sector, from site management to BIM modelling, marketing, management, trades, and much more. We also highlighted different training routes into the industry, including apprenticeships and career progression pathways. Students got to explore real architectural drawings of the school’s future sports hall and were hands-on with material samples such as flooring, doors, ceiling panels, and bricks. Steve also provided an in-depth look into BIM modelling, displaying the 3D rendering of the sports hall and explaining how cutting-edge technology is shaping modern construction.

Highlighting Student Curiosity and Engagement

The students’ curiosity and proactive engagement throughout the event were truly inspiring. Many students asked insightful questions about careers in finance, trades, and engineering, demonstrating a genuine interest in the diverse opportunities within the construction industry. One particularly inquisitive student stepped forward to ask about finding apprenticeships. In response, we provided a list of websites, practical advice on applying, and tips on interview preparation. Every year group actively participated, showcasing their enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

Supporting Our Values and Young People

This initiative embodies SMD’s core values of collaboration, innovation, and inspiration. By engaging with students, we aim to break down stereotypes about the construction industry and demonstrate that there are opportunities for everyone, regardless of their background. Our commitment to being Young Person Ready aligns with our partnership with Inspire 2 Ignite, a program dedicated to educating and inspiring young minds.

Hands-on Learning and Fun

To make the event even more memorable, we wrapped up the session with an exciting PPE race—a fun way for students to experience the importance of safety on a construction site. We also showcased our Construction Journey Series, spotlighting our recent work at Oakfield Gardens Crematorium to give students a look behind the scenes at how our projects come to life.

A Big Thank You

We are grateful to the team at SMD for their dedication, creativity, and teamwork. A heartfelt thank you to the staff at Manor High School for welcoming us and supporting this initiative. And most importantly, thank you to the students who participated with curiosity and enthusiasm. Your questions and energy inspire us, and we are excited to see the future you will help build. – James Croucher, Assistant Headteacher at Manor High School
