Dunton CofE Junior School Construction Nearing Completion: A Collaborative SMD Project

Exciting times at Dunton CofE Junior School – our construction work is now nearing completion! This project has been a real team effort, delivered hand-in-hand with Central Bedfordshire Council and the school community, guided every step of the way by SMD’s core values: Collaborate. Construct. Inspire.

Achieving Excellence in Construction and Community Engagement

From the very beginning, our goal was to create a school environment that not only meets the highest construction standards but also fosters strong community connections. We’re proud to say that our commitment to sustainable and socially responsible school construction earned an Excellent score of 43/45 in the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS).

The CCS monitor highlighted our tidy, organised site and the positive relationships built throughout the project – a real testament to the dedication of everyone involved. Weekly client meetings and monthly community updates ensured everyone stayed informed and engaged, helping build trust and transparency at every stage.

Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility

Sustainability has been a priority throughout the project. Early ecology planning and a detailed carbon reduction strategy, developed in partnership with PECT, ensured that the construction aligned with SMD’s Net Zero by 2040 ambition.

Every decision, from sourcing materials to site management, was made with environmental responsibility in mind – proving that school construction can be both high-quality and eco-conscious.

Supporting Students Through STEM and Sports

The most rewarding part of this project has been connecting with students and the wider community. From school tours and student drawing competitions to steel signing activities, Easter egg donations, eco quizzes, donations of STEM prizes and a community seed giveaway, we’ve loved leaving a positive legacy beyond the building itself.

We were also thrilled to sponsor the school’s new sports kit, celebrating student achievements both on the field and in the classroom. It’s been inspiring to see the next generation of learners engage with STEM, sustainability, and teamwork – all while enjoying a sense of pride in their new facilities.

Building a Stronger Community Together

This project is about far more than bricks and mortar – it represents a shared effort to create a future-ready learning environment while strengthening local community connections.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making this project a success. We can’t wait to share final handover updates soon!
