A modern facility at Manor High School enhances student experience, community use, and earns national recognition from the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
SMD is proud to announce the successful completion and handover of the brand-new sports Block at Manor High School in Oadby, Leicestershire. This state-of-the-art facility marks a significant milestone for both the school and the local community, providing much-needed additional space to support physical education, teaching spaces, changing room and shower facilities, and wider community engagement.
Appointed by Oak Multi-Academy Trust as the client, SMD worked alongside Surveyors to Education and TMV Architects to deliver a modern, high-quality facility. The project involved the design and construction of a new-build steel-frame sports hall, changing facilities and additional classrooms, external landscaping, and associated M&E installations. Minor internal refurbishments were also carried out to adjoining spaces within the live school environment. Works were carefully planned and delivered with minimal disruption to the school’s daily operations.
Graham Rendall, Contracts Manager for the project, shared insight into the collaborative effort behind the successful delivery:
“As Contracts Manager for the new sports hall project, I’m proud of the proactive and collaborative relationship we established with the client from the outset. Regular communication and early engagement helped us align expectations, resolve issues swiftly, and maintain transparency throughout the build.
One of the significant challenges we faced was persistent poor weather, particularly prolonged periods of wet conditions that impacted groundworks and scheduling. However, through early planning, flexible programming, and a solutions-focused approach, we were able to mitigate delays and keep the project on track. The strength of our relationship with the client played a key role in navigating these difficulties, allowing us to work together effectively and deliver a high-quality facility.”
Beyond construction, SMD focused on leaving a positive and lasting legacy at Manor High School. The team actively engaged with students and young people through career events, offering insight into the diverse opportunities within the construction industry. Workforce wellbeing was also a key priority, with health initiatives implemented throughout the build to support the team on site. In line with our sustainability commitments, we appointed sustainability champions and carried out additional tree planting as part of our environmental enhancement efforts.
The project was registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme, receiving an ‘Excellent’ score during its formal inspection-a testament to the team’s commitment to respecting the community, caring for the environment, and valuing the workforce. This strong performance led to the project being nominated for a national award, and ultimately, winning a Bronze National Site Award at the 2025 Considerate Constructors Scheme Awards Gala in Manchester.
The accolade reflects SMD’s high standards, collaborative ethos, and dedication to delivering quality construction that goes beyond the build.
