Supporting Community Spaces – Phase One Complete at United Reformed Church

At SMD, we’re proud to support organisations that serve their communities – and our latest project with the United Reformed Church in Welwyn Garden City is a great example of community-focused construction, enabling meaningful local impact.

Appointed under a Design & Build contract, SMD commenced Phase One enabling and drainage works at the United Reformed Church. The works mark the beginning of a wider programme to enhance the church’s facilities for both its congregation and the wider community.

This initial phase involved targeted enabling works and the delivery of a complete drainage package to support future expansion. The project was delivered within a two-week programme, running through June 2025, with a value of £75,000.

The project team worked closely with key stakeholders to ensure smooth and efficient delivery. Russell Osborne acted as Client Project Manager, while Phillip Read, who also served as an Elder and joint Church Secretary, took on the role of Contract Administrator and Employer’s Agent. BB+C Architects led the design, with SMD’s team Joshua Hawker as Site Manager, Graham Rendall as Contracts Manager, and Jon Wren overseeing the commercial delivery.

Reflecting on the project, Jon Wren said:

“It’s been a privilege to support a scheme that contributes directly to community life. This phase may be small in scale, but its impact is significant – setting the stage for future improvements that will benefit the church and its wider network for years to come.”

Working alongside the United Reformed Church, our team remained committed to delivering high-quality enabling works with minimal disruption – creating the foundation for spaces to be used for worship, outreach, and support services.

We were proud to be trusted with this important first phase and look forward to supporting the future development of this valued community hub.
