Spacemaker Development Ltd (SMD) is proud to announce that we have been appointed as the principal contractor for the highly anticipated expansion and improvement works at Dunton CofE Junior School.
This project marks a significant milestone in the school’s history and is a direct result of the dedicated efforts of local villagers and councillors who campaigned to keep the school open amid proposed educational changes.
The project involves the construction of a new two-storey teaching block, featuring three modern classrooms, including a practical learning area designed for hands-on subjects such as cookery, art, and design. Additionally, the school’s facilities will undergo internal alterations, and the existing temporary classroom will be removed to create a more cohesive and sustainable learning environment.
As part of the development, a brand-new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) will be installed, significantly enhancing the school’s recreational facilities and providing year-round access to sports and physical education. The project also includes improved accessibility features, such as modern toilet facilities and a lift, ensuring that all students, including those with special educational needs, have equal access to the school’s resources. Upgraded perimeter fencing will further enhance security and safety for pupils and staff.
“We are delighted to be entrusted with delivering this important project for Dunton C of E Junior School and the wider community,” said Paul Hopewell-Campion, Site Manager at SMD. “This development will provide an improved, modern learning environment while ensuring minimal disruption to the school’s daily operations.”
Given that the school remains operational during construction, SMD has developed a comprehensive project delivery plan to ensure a safe and efficient work environment. Construction activities will be scheduled to avoid peak school times, and robust communication channels will be maintained with school staff, parents, and local residents.
The importance of this project has been widely recognised, with local press covering the significance of the school’s expansion. As reported by Biggleswade Today (Read More), the new facilities will address increasing pupil numbers while maintaining high educational standards. The project has been welcomed as a major victory for the community following their hard-fought campaign to keep the school open.
Speaking to Maria Poultney, Head of Schools at Dunton CofE Junior Schools Federation, she said “This project marks a new and exciting chapter for our school and our wider Federation. The expansion ensures a strong and sustainable future for our children, providing modern, well-equipped spaces that will enrich their learning for years to come. We are especially grateful that Tia & Paul at SMD has planned a range of activities to help our pupils engage with and celebrate this important moment in the school’s history. It’s wonderful to see our Dunton site develop the Federation into a full primary model, strengthening the pathway for children from Wrestlingworth CofE Infant School as they continue their journey with us.” She finished with “We’re looking forward to seeing this vision come to life and are truly thankful for the support from our community that has made it possible.”
We look forward to working closely with Dunton CofE Junior School, our trusted client Central Bedfordshire Council and design partners Saunders Boston Architects, Design4Structures, Wadys Electrical & Mechanical Building Services, Mace and Baily Garner LLP, as well as the local community to successfully deliver this project, which is expected to be completed by Autumn 2025.
