Fulbrook School

The Fulbrook School expansion was part of Central Bedfordshire Council’s ‘Schools for the Future’ programme. The project included the construction of a new two-storey teaching block, sports hall with changing facilities, and refurbishment of former cloakrooms to provide sound-proofed music practice and performance rooms. The work also comprised extensive external development including: car parking, EV charging, landscaping, hard play areas and bicycle storage.

Our Responsibilities

During the project, there was a need to expand development across the site to accommodate intake from another local school. This resulted in an extensive redesign of existing buildings, external works, and incoming services infrastructure. The original single-storey teaching block was developed into a two-storey building, and existing parts of the school were repurposed to maintain high-quality education and support provision.

The new two-storey building consisted of an off-site manufactured structural insulated panel (SIP) frame and structure. SMD not only assisted with the redesign of the teaching block, construction of the sports block and associated external works, but also supported the coordination of master plan phasing, costings, logistics, safeguarding, and health and safety.

The project was within a live school environment with external lettings, so regular communication and coordination needed to be maintained at all stages.

Social Impact

Fulbrook School is a registered site with the Considerate Constructors Scheme, scoring Excellent (42/45) following the latest inspection. Since work started on the project, we focused our efforts on ways to benefit the school and wider community, including hosting site tours for parents and pupils, and providing donations to local projects.

SMD’s proactive approach and collaborative working has resulted in them becoming one of our trusted partners. Working closely with SMD to deliver a variety of different education schemes across Bedfordshire has been a real pleasure. Their ethos, passion, and combined vision have helped us elevate the local communities that we have worked within. A valued relationship has been created between Concertus and SMD, and we look forward to working closely with them in the future.
