About this project

The refurbishment began with a full strip out and demolition of existing walls, ceilings, and internal finishes. We then conducted extensive reconfiguration works to enhance acoustic performance, incorporating new partition systems and ceiling treatments. Upgrades to power, lighting and data formed a key element of the electrical works, as did the integration of modern containment systems, trunking, and improved emergency lighting solutions.

Further work included electrical modifications in adjacent rooms to support new teaching wall configurations and storage spaces. Our electrical installations also included replacement of outdated distribution boards with modern MEM Memshield units, making the space fully compliant with BS7671 wiring regulations and ready for IT integration.

All works were completed in collaboration with third-party contractors responsible for the installation of IT systems, interactive teaching panels, security alarms and data infrastructure, ensuring seamless delivery ahead of the new academic term.

Our Responsibilities

Delivering this project during the summer holidays required careful coordination and strict scheduling to avoid disruption to school operations. Despite being unoccupied during the main works, the site layout and live educational environment demanded close attention to safeguarding, access control, and logistics planning.

One key challenge was the presence of artex ceilings containing asbestos, which required strict compliance with relevant legislation. SMD collaborated closely with licensed professionals to ensure these areas were made safe before works progressed.
