The crematorium’s tranquil and open space features specialist architectural details such as stone cladding, decorative masonry, an intricate planting scheme and new lake.

Our Responsibilities

Central Bedfordshire Council awarded SMD the contract to construct the new crematorium building and its associated landscaping as Principal Contractor with some Contractor Design Portions (CDPs). Meticulous planning at the tender stage for logistics and phasing ensured a productive start on site. In February 2023, following a short pre-construction period, we began infrastructure works over the 25-acre site.

Due to the unique nature of the facilities, a robust subcontractor selection was undertaken to secure the specialist equipment and bespoke materials. SMD procured industry-leading experts and established detailed plans to successfully deliver the project to completion.

We were reactive and agile and allocated additional resources and processes to not only meet the key milestones but also to maintain the highest standards of health, safety and quality.

Social Impact

Throughout the project, SMD worked closely with the Milton Keynes Food Bank to provide aid to this much-needed community project. To mark the completion of the crematorium build, we contributed a commemorative plaque for the site’s memorial gardens.
