Swallowfield Primary School

We were delighted to be part of Central Bedfordshire Council’s ongoing ‘Schools for the Future’ programme. Our organisation was enlisted as the main contractor to manage and deliver the Swallowfield Primary School project in its entirety. We created a new single-storey expansion to provide an additional 120 places for children at the educational establishment.

Our Responsibilities

During our time working on this project, we constructed a stand-alone teaching block with its associated external works and finishes. The scope also comprised a WC infill extension on the original school building, which was completed in parallel with the main project.

We worked agilely to accommodate a regional mains water service, which was running through the site in a different position than first projected, meaning that some of the original designs needed to be adapted.

Social impact

Swallowfield School was a registered site with the Considerate Constructors Scheme, scoring Excellent (43/45) on the last site inspection. As work began, we made sure the community remained at the very heart of the project.

Throughout the build process, we focused on involving the school and wider community. This included activities such as hosting an event and site tour for pupils, along with wildlife habitat creation using recycled site materials. In addition to this, we updated community notice boards, posted regular letter drops to those living nearby, and maintained an open online dialogue.

By maintaining regular contact with local residents and community groups, SMD Ltd was able to offer excess recyclable materials back to the community too.
