Children at Brocks Hill Primary School in Oadby will get a brand-new teaching block to accommodate the school’s expansion to three form entry.

The exciting project will also provide more car parking, a new pathway, fencing and pedestrian gates, enhancing safety at the school.

Rated Outstanding by Ofsted, the school has been identified as being ideal for expansion by Leicestershire County Council to accommodate additional pupil spaces needed in the area.

The school will move organically from a two classes per year school to three, and will welcome 90 pupils into the early years foundations stage each year, starting with one new class each year until all year groups have three classes by 2032.

Lionheart Educational Trust, which runs the school, appointed SMD as main contractor to deliver the new two-storey modular building adjacent to the existing school building and associated external works during a two-phase project. The project manager is S2e.

The first phase, which started in June, includes excavation of the existing car park, roadway and pavement and installation of new drainage, fencing and gates. This will be followed by phase two, which includes creating a new access road and the foundations for the new teaching block. The project will be completed before summer 2027 with external landscaping works.

The new teaching block will be constructed at the rear of the of the existing school site and provide seven new classrooms, library, hall with servery and storage, toilets and offices.

Moomith Ullah, operations director at SMD, said: “We can’t wait to get on to the next phase and start work on what will be wonderful new facilities for local families. We enjoy working on education projects because we have the opportunity to get really involved with school life and show the children all about construction and what goes into building their new facilities.”

Oliver Willis, head of estates at Lionheart Educational Trust, said: “We are delighted to be working with SMD on this project to expand and enhance the facilities for the staff and children at Brocks Hill Primary School. The SMD team has found creative solutions for phasing and logistical delivery that promotes safeguarding and segregation.

“We want to provide a high-quality environment for the children to grow and develop in, and the new building will allow us to offer even more families a first-class education located in the community where they live.”

Cathryn Shilling, head of school at Brocks Hill Primary School, said:I am really excited to see the project begin and know that the new facilities will really enhance the provision for our pupils. It has been a pleasure to work with SMD and together plan the best solutions for the safe and timely delivery of our project.”

Cllr Charles Pugsley, lead member for children and families at Leicestershire County Council, said: “We are pleased to support the expansion of the school, which will see the creation of some fantastic new facilities for pupils. We’re looking forward to work starting and seeing the project take shape.”

Martin Holland director at S2e commented: “S2e are delighted to be working with both Lionheart Educational Trust and SMD Ltd on the construction of the new teaching block project at Brocks Hill Primary School.

“Whilst the project has been a long time in the development stage, we are excited to see it come to life now that works have started on site.

“The new teaching block will provide the school with high-quality learning spaces to support its growing pupil numbers and the future needs of the school.”

SMD has a wide portfolio of Education projects and is also currently working on several projects in Bedfordshire.
